Toyota has announced it will start selling a new Prius in 2018, and it’s only the latest example of automakers pushing their products to electric vehicles.
Toyota’s announcement comes just a few days after Tesla, which announced its first production electric vehicle in late 2016, posted a 26% jump in stock price in the same week.
Toyota shares, which were up 1.3% after the announcement, are up about 9% this year.
The new Priuses are expected to have a range of 310 miles on a full charge and can go 60 mph (100 km/h).
They’ll be sold in four different versions.
The sedan version is priced at $28,000 and will have a $5,000 base price.
The crossover, which starts at $35,000, has a $8,500 base price and a range between 310 and 310 miles.
Toyota is aiming for a mass market and the crossover has been successful, although there’s a slight downside to the sedan: It’s a bit pricier than the sedan version, which is expected to go on sale in 2020.
However, Toyota’s other electric vehicle is coming, with an expected 2020 release, which will be a more mainstream, plug-in hybrid.
The company said it plans to launch two different models in 2019: one with a range in excess of 300 miles and another with a total range of 400 miles.
The hybrid will have an EPA-rated range of 85 miles and have an electric motor that can reach 60 mph in 4.5 seconds.
Both vehicles will have all-wheel drive, and the hybrid will also be able to drive on electric batteries.
The Prius is a new model for Toyota, which had been considering a plug-ins lineup since 2016.
The automaker said it was looking at hybrids, but it never made a plug in car until now.
“We started with hybrids and thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be nice if we had a hybrid in a Prius?'”
Toyota Chief Executive Akio Toyoda told reporters in November.
“It was really an opportunity to go beyond hybrids.”
Toyota will offer a hybrid version of the Prius starting in 2019, and another version in 2020, he added.
Toyota will also sell the Priuses with the optional battery pack, which the automaker has not said yet.
The two hybrids will also have the same powertrain as the Prii, with a 5.7-liter V6 engine.
Toyota said the Prios will be available in three color schemes, including a blue, green, and white model, and a white model.
The first model, with its 5.0-liter inline-six, will be sold starting in 2021, with the next model, the 5.6-liter, starting in 2022.
The second model, featuring a 6.0 liter inline-four, will come later.
